HANCOCK COUNTY – Silver Slipper sets opening day

The Silver Slipper, a new casino in Hancock County, has set its opening for 7 p.m. on Nov. 9.

It will have more than 1,000 slot machines, 26 table games and 10 poker tables. Its restaurants will be the Jubilee Buffet, the Blue Bayou Bar and Grill steakhouse and Palm Court Cafe. The casino has hired 600 employees.

Josephine Crawford, the 84-year-old aunt of Silver Slipper Chief Operating Officer John Ferrucci, will have the honor of being the first to play a slot machine. Hopefully, Crawford will leave behind some luck for other gamblers. In April, she won $10 million, the biggest jackpot in New Jersey history, on a nickel machine at Harrah’s Atlantic City.

Crawford is flying down to take part in the grand opening party. The festivities will include two free performances by Sonny Turner and the Original Platters in the Casino Show Bar. Repeat performances will occur Friday and Saturday nights.

“We’ve been working day and night to make it happen,” Ferrucci said. “Now the wait is over. It’s time to celebrate the newest and friendliest casino on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”

The Silver Slipper will give away grand opening T-shirts until the supply runs out.

The casino will make history as the first newly built casino to open on land since state law changed to allow gambling on shore within 800 feet of the mean high tide.

Paul Alanis, the chairman of Silver Slipper Gaming, is the developer of the privately owned casino.
